The Portuguese has won the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award, which is decided by the club's fans but loses out to De Gea in teammates' voting.

Cristiano Ronaldo has been named Manchester United's Player of the Year, after losing out to David De Gea in the club's Players' Player of the 2021-22 season election.

The Portuguese striker had a fruitful first season back at Old Trafford, netting 24 goals in all competitions, including 18 Premier League goals.

Indeed, he finished third in the battle for the Golden Boot in England's top division, behind only Son Heung-min and Mohamed Salah, and has declared his desire to assist United to win titles in the 2022-23 season.

The Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award is chosen by a poll of the club's fans all over the world.

Supporters were given the opportunity to vote for the player they thought deserved the prize, with Ronaldo garnering 60% of the overall votes.

De Gea came in second with 29% of the vote, while Fred came in third with 2%.

Ronaldo has also been shortlisted for the PFA Player of the Year award, where he is up against Kevin De Bruyne, Harry Kane, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, and Virgil van Dijk.

Ronaldo has earned United's Player of the Year title four times, most recently in 2003-04, 2006-07, and 2007-08, the season in which the Red Devils won the Champions League.

De Gea has won the award four times, including three times in a row between 2013 and 2016, while Portuguese players have prevailed for the last three seasons, with Bruno Fernandes winning in 2019-20 and 2020-21.

Over the last ten years, Luke Shaw, Ander Herrera, Robin van Persie, and Antonio Valencia have all won the award.

While Ronaldo was the winner of United's Player of the Year award, he did not win the accolade that is decided by his teammates.

De Gea was named United's Players' Player of the Year for the 2021-22 season, marking the fourth time in his career that he has received the honor.

Luke Shaw was the winner of the award the previous year.
