Baggio: Italy should have been handed World Cup place after Euro 2020

Roberto Baggio is disappointed that Italy won't be at a second straight World Cup.

Roberto Baggio

said that it was "madness" that Italy didn't automatically qualify for the World Cup because they won

Euro 2020

. Last July,

Italy

beat England in a penalty shootout at the Euro 2020, but in March, they lost to

North Macedonia

in a World Cup play-off qualifying game.

That meant the Azzurri didn't make it to the World Cup for the second time in a row. They missed out on both Russia in 2018 and Qatar in 2022. On Wednesday,

Roberto Mancini

's team played against

Argentina

, who won the Copa America. In a match between the best teams in Europe and South America, Argentina beat Roberto Mancini's team 3-0.

Some people think Lionel Scaloni's team could be the favorite to win the World Cup in November because of how much better Argentina was than the other team. Scaloni said before the "Finalissima" that Italy deserved a spot in the World Cup, and Baggio said that the Azzurri should have been given automatic qualification.

"It's a shame that Italy didn't go straight to

Qatar

after winning the European Championship," Italy legend Baggio told La Gazzetta dello Sport on Thursday. "It's scandalous and makes no sense to me. Will these guys have done enough to get a reward? I'm not sure what I would have done if I had been in their shoes...

"It's the worst thing to accept because anything can happen in 90 minutes, and if one thing goes wrong, you have to stay home."Baggio was also quick to say that Argentina and Italy were not as good as each other at Wembley Stadium.

"Scaloni's team has a lot of great players, but the Azzurri have suffered a lot from being kicked out of the World Cup. It was a huge psychological blow," he said. "The two teams didn't have the same level of calm on the field."

Italy will try to make up for the loss to Argentina and the fact that they didn't win the World Cup when they host Germany in their first Nations League game on Saturday.
