Gundogan: It was destiny for me to help Manchester City win the title

Ilkay Gundogan says it was "destiny" that he was in the right place at the right time to help Manchester City win the title.

Ilkay Gundogan

,

Manchester City

's star, thought it was "destiny" that he scored two goals in a row to help his team win the

Premier League

on the last day of the season.

The Germany international scored twice in the second half to help

Pep Guardiola

's team beat Aston Villa 3-2 after being down by two goals. That win meant they could successfully defend their top-flight title. They beat rivals,

Liverpool

, by one point, giving Guardiola four league titles in the last five seasons.

Gundogan started the game on the bench, but when he came in, the team's performance got better, and he thinks that may have been because it was meant to be.

He told City's official website, "I don't know, maybe it was fate, maybe it was a little bit of luck." But I was in the right place twice and scored. I didn't feel like I had much of a choice. We only had 20 minutes left to play, and we were already down 2-0, so all I wanted to do was get into the box and try to figure out where the danger was."

"I knew Raheem Sterling was going to go to the sideline and cross for the first goal, which was a header. I thought the danger might be at the second post, and to be honest, the ball was perfect. I had no choice but to rest my head on it. We all knew Kevin [De Bruyne] was good when he whipped the ball to the second post for the third goal. So, it was important for me to know when he was going to play the ball, run, and try to stay onside. It was just the right time!"
