Villas-Boas: It's up to Kane to decide about his future and ambitions

Tue 24 May 2022 | 16:29

Last year, Harry Kane came close to departing Tottenham, and Andre Villas-Boas thinks it is up to the star to decide whether or not he still wants to go.

According to former

manager Andre Villas-Boas, Harry Kane's future at Spurs is dependent on whether he can reach his goals by staying put.

Kane was extensively linked with a move to Manchester City at the end of the 2020-21 season, but City were hesitant to pay Spurs' asking price.

Because of the vagueness surrounding the player's future, he missed the 2021-22 season's first-weekend win against the Cityzens.

Despite a sluggish start to the season, with only two goal engagement (one goal, one assist) in his first 13

Premier League

matches, Kane went on to produce 24 goals (16 goals, eight assists) in the remaining 24 games.

The shift in fortunes occurred shortly after Antonio Conte took over as Nuno Espirito Santo's successor, and the Italian steered Spurs to fourth place and

Champions League

qualifying, which they achieved with a 5-0 thrashing of Norwich City on the last day, in which Kane struck and assisted.

More worries over Kane's future are sure to surface throughout the preseason, albeit City have moved on and signed Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund.

Villas-Boas, who led Tottenham for 17 months until December 2013, believes Kane's future will be defined by his own objectives and whether any possible buyers are ready to meet Tottenham's criteria.

"I think it's up to him to decide what is progress in his career or not," he told Stats Perform. "If you fulfill your own ambitions of being in Tottenham and making a part of the history in Tottenham, that is great.

"If you have ambitions to go further and to test yourself in other environments, I think you will depart.

"I think it is up to him, it's also up to the clubs who can come around knocking and take him away, but I wish him all the best as well.

"He's a good boy, he has proved a lot of people wrong, he has established himself and I sincerely hope he does well."
