Lionel Messi's first season with Paris Saint-Germain has been up and down, but he hopes that next season will be better.
thinks "good things are coming" after finishing his first season atParis Saint-Germain
with a 5-0 win over Metz. The Parisians are also celebratingKylian Mbappe
's decision to stay with the club.
But while talking about how happy he was to help the club win its 10th Ligue 1 title, Messi also brought up the "bitter taste" of PSG's loss to
in the Champions League in March, a game in which he still thinks PSG was the better team.
Messi had an assist as PSG finished their season by thrashing Metz. The Argentine ended his first year at the club with 25 goals and 25 assists in 34 games in all competitions (11 goals, 14 assists).
The 34-year-first old's season in France hasn't gone exactly as planned, though. In March, Paris threw away a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 to Real Madrid in the Champions League. After that loss, Messi and
were booed by their own fans in their next games, and head coach Mauricio Pochettino has been under more pressure since he couldn't bring PSG its first European title.
Still, everyone at PSG was happy to hear on Saturday that Messi's strike partner Mbappe had agreed to stay with the club for another three years. The 23-year-old, who had been linked with a huge move to Real Madrid, celebrated his new contract with a hat-trick. He now has 45 goals and 17 assists in Ligue 1, which is the most of any player in Europe's top five leagues this season.
Messi said that he thought the club would do better next season as he thought back on his first year in Paris. Messi wrote on Instagram, along with a picture of him celebrating with teammates Mbappe, Neymar, and
, "The season is over, and I want to thank my teammates for how they've treated me since I joined and my family for always being there for me and supporting me."
"Everything that happened made it a different year, but at the end of it all, we won a league that I was very happy about because it was the first trophy here in Paris. We are left with the bitter taste of losing in the Champions League when we were doing better, but I also want to be left with the joy of having won another title, which was also one of the goals. "I'm sure good things will happen in 2022. It will be a big year, and we're going to work hard to be the best at everything."
