Simeone urges Atletico to seal CL football in the final four games

Should Atletico Madrid keep their three-point advantage over Real Betis, they can be sure of the Champions League football next season.

Diego Simeone

insisted that his side have “four finals” remained to seal a place in the

Champions League

as they get ready to lock horns with Real Madrid on Sunday.

Atletico Madrid

had a goalless draw with Granada after being defeated 2-0 at the hands of Athletic Bilbao last Saturday, which let Real Betis move closer to them.

Real Madrid

won the title this season with four games left to play when they vanquished Espanyol last weekend and will face Atletico next. Atletico Madrid have not been able to win Los Blancos in their last eight encounters across all competitions.

Madrid are enjoying a run of 11 unbeaten matches against Atletico in La Liga and the Argentine tactician is aware that his side need the points to decrease the pressure.

"The reality is that we are in a decisive situation, there are four finals left," he told reporters at a pre-match news conference on Saturday.

"We will face the derby in the best way, with great enthusiasm and try to evade everything that is being talked about around the situation. What worries us is the result.

"I hope that the team can express itself in the best way, that it is strong, focused, competitive and from there good things happen. If you show yourself strong, in the match everything will be positive."

There was a stir caused by Atletico before kick-off at Wanda Metropolitano when they confirmed that they won’t offer Madrid a guard of honor.

"Always in this search for questions they try to generate controversy, what he said, what he feels,"

he added.

"The reality is what the club said in a statement, explained perfectly, to congratulate Real Madrid above all, to the footballers and to their coaching staff because they have done a great job.

"I have great respect for Madrid, who have just become champions, but we have more respect for our people who are with us all day."

Although Madrid have won the title already, Simeone thinks that Carlo Ancelotti does not plan to change hic tactics as they get ready for a familiar Los Blancos set-up.

"The structure is not going to change or the way of playing," he continued. "Carlo is a great coach, with very clear ideas. In that case, the names vary but not the tactics."
