Ginter to make a move to Freiburg when Gladbach contract ends

The German international has penned a contract with Freiburg and will join the club when the season is over.

Freiburg

have announced that they signed

Matthias Ginter

and the Germany defender will make a move from

Borussia Monchengladbach

when the

Bundesliga

season is over.

The Germany international is a product of the Freiburg academy and at the age of 18, he made his Bundesliga bow for the club, he netted the winner against Augsburg.

He then featured in 81 matches for Freiburg before making a move to Borussia Dortmund in 2014 and he made 102 appearances in three seasons for the club. He contributed to a DFB-Pokal victory in 2017.

Ginter joined Gladbach before the 2017-18 season and made a name for himself as they key player in defence. He has played in 46 games for Germany.

However, the 28-year-old does not plan to pen a new contract with Gladbach and Freiburg pronounced on Wednesday that he will come back to his first team.

"I wanted to do something special in my career, and there's nothing more meaningful to me than a return to my home,"

Ginter said.

"The development the club has undergone, as well as the potential in the team and the discussions with the club over the last weeks have been great. To find something like that in my hometown, especially nowadays, is extremely rare. It was just a perfect fit all round."

Ginter may feature in the Champions League next season as Freiburg are in the fourth place following an incredible season.

They won three of their previous four matches in Bundesliga and drew the other one against Gladbach. They are sitting three points behind Bayer Leverkusen.

Freiburg will lock horns with Leipzig in the final of the DFB-Pokal on May 21.
