Nicolo Zaniolo: I hope to win something with Mourinho

Mon 25 April 2022 | 18:00

Nicol Zaniolo believes Roma can 'win' silverware under Jose Mourinho, beginning with the Europa Conference League semi-final against Leicester City, a 'classically English side.'

On Thursday evening, the first leg of the Conference League semi-final takes place at

Leicester City

. Zaniolo's hat-trick in the quarter-final against Norwegians

Bodo/Glimt

earned him a spot in the final.

"It was the ideal match. "We did a fantastic job defending and attacking,"

Nicolo Zaniolo

told

UEFA.com

. "I'm overjoyed because the hat-trick helped the squad advance." When you see Lorenzo Pellegrini looking at you on the first goal, simply start running because the ball is heading your way."

Prior to that treble, the Italy international had not scored since January 23 against Empoli, so it was a welcome relief. "Scoring goals has never been a preoccupation for me; I prefer to put in a terrific performance and win the game regardless of whether or not I score."

"I have to admit, I could only dream of scoring my first hat-trick in front of 65,000 fans in a European tournament quarter-final." That was difficult to believe it might happen, but I had fantasized about it. The most memorable evenings of my career were my debut against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, my brace against Porto, and this hat-trick with Bodo/Glimt."

Mourinho had rested Zaniolo for a number of important games this season, including the Derby della Capitale against arch-rivals Lazio, but it had a positive effect on him. "One of the best coaches in the world is

Jose Mourinho

!" He instilled in everyone the importance of never giving up, staying on your toes, and working together to achieve success. With him, we're hoping to win something. I believe we have a greater chance with a coach that knows how to win.

"Winning the

Conference League

would make us very pleased, but it would just be the beginning, not the end." I'll accept that 14 years without a trophy is excessive. The

Roma

fans have always been there for me, perhaps even more so when I'm not playing, so I can only thank them and say they'll always be in my heart."

Claudio Ranieri famously won the Premier League with Leicester City, so they're no strangers to pulling off upsets. "It's a European semi-final, so it's bound to be challenging," Zaniolo continued. "Leicester are a tough, traditional English side who run hard. However, we are Roma, and we have shown this season that we can compete with anyone and have no fear."
