RB Leipzig 1-1 Atalanta: Muriel and Musso grab a draw

On Thursday, Atalanta and RB Leipzig played a fantastic end-to-end match, but neither team could gain control of the first leg.

On Thursday,

RB Leipzig

and

Atalanta

drew 1-1 in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final, setting up a winner-takes-all showdown in Bergamo. With a 4-1 thrashing of

Borussia Dortmund

on Saturday,

Domenico Tedesco

's Bundesliga team extended their unbeaten run to eleven games. Still, they fell at the Red Bull Arena when Luis Muriel scored after 17 minutes.

After

Andre Silva

's penalty was saved by Juan Musso after the break, Gian Piero Gasperini's visitors thought they had escaped lightly. Still, Davide Zappacosta miscued on his own goal to restore parity. Teun Koopmeiners and Dominik Szoboszlai were denied by the woodwork for both teams, leaving it all to play for in the final. Christopher Nkunku skewed a half-chance wide from Benjamin Henrichs' mishit strike in an otherwise uneventful start to the game.

On the other hand, Muriel sparked the tie when he snuck through from the left-wing and skillfully whipped into the top-right corner for his fourth goal in European competition this season, his best total. Soon after, Muriel came close to repeating the trick, but his left-footed shot nearly evaded the far corner before the woodwork denied Silva and

Mario Pasalic

at opposite ends.

After the interval, Peter Gulacsi deflected a Muriel curler out of range, while Merih Demiral unnecessarily felled Nkunku inside the box. Musso saved Silva's penalty before Willi Orban was stopped on the rebound by a fantastic reflex save from Musso, but Leipzig leveled moments later when Zappacosta clumsily turned Angelino's cross into his own net.

As neither side could be separated, Gulacsi turned a low Koopmeiners shot against the post and Szoboszlai headed onto the crossbar, while Lukas Klostermann had a late strike blocked on the line following a goalmouth scramble from Emil Forsberg's corner. In a week, the two will meet again in Italy for the return leg. On Sunday, Leipzig will host Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga, while Atalanta will travel to Sassuolo in Serie A.
