Southgate not worried about Kane's pressure to break Ronney's record

Sun 27 March 2022 | 7:50

The Tottenham star is only 4 goals away from becoming the best goal scorer in English history.

England

boss Gareth Southgate has said he is not worried about

Harry Kane

coming under pressure as he approaches Wayne Rooney's goal-scoring record.

Kane scored the winning goal for England in a 2-1 win over

Switzerland

in a friendly at Wembley. This goal took him to a record 49 goals and equaled Bobby Charlton, and now he is only 4 goals away from Wayne Rooney's record to become the best goal scorer in English history. There have been rumors that Wayne Rooney has struggled to break the record, but Southgate believes there is no obstacle in Kane's way.

"I think he's quite calm about it, confident he can get there because his goals per game record is phenomenally good.

"I don't know where that would compare to Jimmy Greaves, but I imagine he's the only other player who'd be close [to Greaves], so I think he knows there's always going to be speculation.

"If he doesn't break it before [the World Cup] then [the country] will be saying he's out of form and should he be in the team.

"One way or another, the focus will be on him – he's used to dealing with it and I'm sure he'll be very calm about it whichever way."
