Burnley pen with Wolfsburg's Weghorst before the transfer deadline

Burnley have penned with striker Wout Weghorst on the last day of the January transfer window for a deal worth £12m.

Wout Weghorst

, who has met the back of the net six times in 18 matches in

Bundesliga

this season, has penned a three-and-a-half-year contract after finishing a medical on Sunday.

The striker will replace Chris Wood, who made a move to relegation rivals

Newcastle

this month.

Burnley

were not expecting to lose Wood this month, but Newcastle surprised them by activating the release clause of £25m.

Weghorst has taken the No 9 shirt that was vacant by Wood and will work with his new teammates on Monday.

In a video posted by the club's official Twitter page, Weghorst said:

"Hello Burnley fans. I'm really glad to be here. I'm really happy and I'm really proud.

"I'm really looking forward to seeing you all on Saturday in an important game against Watford."

Burnley boss Sean Dyche said:

"Wout is a player that our scouts have been strong on for some time, and we feel that he can add to all that we do at Burnley Football Club.

"His signing is a continued show of the club's and team's development. We wish Wout well as he earns the right to push our group forwards."

Weghorst, who played 12 times for his country, has met the target 59 times in 118 Bundesliga games for Wolfsburg in the last three-and-a-half years.

He netted 50 goals in the Eredivisie when playing for Heracles and AZ Alkmaar as well.

Burnley chairman Alan Pace said:

"I'd like to wish Wout a very warm welcome to Burnley Football Club.

"We're absolutely delighted to have brought in a great talent with a fantastic goalscoring pedigree in Germany. I look forward to him joining up with Sean and the team.

"January is a famously difficult window, as we all know. I am however delighted that a lot of hard work by everyone involved has paid off."
