Another injury setback for Ramos as the PSG vs Real Madrid draws near

Sun 30 January 2022 | 15:15

PSG has announced their center-back Sergio Ramos hurt his calf during training on Thursday and is being evaluated subsequently.

Sergio Ramos has suffered another calf injury, putting his appearance against Real Madrid in the

Champions League

in jeopardy.

Since coming to PSG from Real Madrid, where he had spent the previous 16 seasons, the 35-year-old has been plagued by a number of annoying problems.

He has participated in PSG's previous two matches, but a low-grade muscular injury that he sustained in training on Thursday may force him to miss further time.

On Sunday, PSG announced the news on their website, with more tests scheduled until the middle of next week, and Mauricio Pochettino is uncertain how long the Spaniard will be out.

"You never know with an injury. You have to follow the evolution. We don't know the duration of his unavailability," Pochettino said at a news conference.

On February 15,

Ligue 1

leaders PSG will host Madrid in the opening leg of their Champions League last-16 clash before traveling to Madrid three weeks later.

Ramos has only appeared five times for Pochettino's side in all competitions since his arrival in July, logging a total of 284 minutes on the pitch.

Ramos started 15 LaLiga matches in 2020-21, the fewest he has played in a season for Real Madrid, and a significant reduction from the 35 appearances he made the previous season.

For Monday's

Coupe de France

last-16 match against Nice, PSG will be without striker Neymar and playmaker Georginio Wijnaldum.

Wijnaldum is anticipated to recover from an ankle strain by the end of the week, while Neymar, who hasn't played since November, will be re-evaluated on Monday.

Pochettino may still rely on Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi for the cup game.

Messi has got a chance to improve on his form this week after being left out of Argentina's newest team due to coronavirus infection.

Pochettino has been heartened by what he has observed from his countrymen Messi before the Nice game.

"We are very happy with what Leo has done in training this week," Pochettino said. "He has trained well. He is in good condition to start.

"For Kylian, it's a question of complicity. Their connection is starting to see each other. They are two very great footballers.

"It's been a good week of work. I'm happy because we were able to work on the tactics, not just the physical side. We hope that this work will be seen by the end of the season."
