Serie A games with 35% COVID infection in the squads will postpone

The Italian government has created a new regulation for team sports, stating that teams in Serie A and B can reschedule games if more than 35% of their roster has COVID-19.

The Lega

Serie A

and the ASL (local health authorities) have been at odds for weeks about who has the authority to impose a match's deferment.

While the Lega Serie A wished to follow the

UEFA

regulation, which states that the game can go on as long as there are 13 players on the field, including a goalie, the different regional ASL authorities would force whole squads to be quarantined for five to ten days if an epidemic occurred.

A discussion was conducted today to achieve a settlement on new guidelines that reduce quarantine for close connections of persons who test positive if they are vaccinated.

It has now been determined that if at least 35% of the playing team tests positive for COVID-19, the game can be postponed.

In a roster of 33-34 players, that translates to 11 players who are positive at any one moment.

According to the new guideline, anyone who tests positive must self-isolate, while close contacts will be tested daily for at least five days but will not be required to do so.

The protocol has been finalized after some matches went ahead with numerous players out, resulting in

Udinese

suing to prevent the 6-2 defeat to

Atalanta

from being registered, claiming it was unfair in the circumstances.

In Serie A, 98 percent of players have been vaccinated and the other two percent will not be allowed to play unless they have a

Super Green Pass

, which means vaccination.
