Newcastle hope for Atletico’s Trippier to be their first new signing

The Magpies are keen on putting pen to paper with Kieran Trippier as their first of at least four new signings in the January transfer window.

Newcastle

made a formal offer for

Atletico Madrid

’s

Kieran Trippier

and hope to make him their first new signing this month.

Eddie Howe

is hopeful that by acquiring the England defender’s services, there will be at least three more new arrivals as he aims to keep Newcastle in the

Premier League

.

The defender seemed to be waving goodbye to his Atletico fans at the Wanda Metropolitano following their 2-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano on Sunday.

After the clash, Atletico boss

Diego Simeone

said:

"As I said the other day, it always depends on the footballer to what can happen.

"We want him and hope he stays with us but it is clear today that when a player wants to leave he can't be retained."

He and Trippier worked together when he was coaching Burnley, penning with the right-back from Manchester City in 2012 following a remarkable load spell at Turf Moor.

The 31-year-old made a move to Atletico Madrid in 2019, following a four-year spell at Tottenham and contributed to the La Liga victory last season.

Trippier has had 35 caps for England and was in the starting XI of the Euro 2020 final against Italy last summer.

Newcastle are sitting 19th on the table after winning only one game after 19 encounters this season. Howe is hoping that Trippier can help them secure their stay in the England top flight.
