Michael Carrick talked about the Portugal international’s two-goal performance and his final display with Manchester United.
’s 800th and 801st goals were “perfect” for the end of his time at the helm.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s brace helped the Red Devils win the battle againstArsenal
3-2 on Thursday before Carrick revealed that he will depart.
Carrick, who became United’s caretaker manager at the helm after
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
was sacked, helped his side win the clash againstVillarreal
and a draw withChelsea
. He has now confirmed that he will be working as an interim under Ralf Rangnick.
The ex-United midfielder, who contributed to five Premier League titles and a Champions League crown during his 12 years with the club, praised Ronaldo’s performance.
He's not younger,"
Carrick told reporters post-game.
"As we all were. And to see kind of how he has gone full cycle and come to us not quite at the end of his career obviously, but coming towards the later stages.
"I think just seeing how he goes about his business, his mentality, his attitude, and obviously his quality. I mean, to score so many goals, it's incredible.
"He's been terrific this week. Especially for me. The things I have asked of him, and the way he has gone about his business with the other players is top, top, drawer.
"So no surprise that he goes and scores tonight. The perfect ending really."
The Red Devils netted three goals in the battle against Arsenal for the first time since 2016. Arsenal scored the opener early doors through Emile Smith Rowe but Bruno Fernandes leveled the game before half-time.
Fernandes enjoyed his 100th appearance for Manchester United. He had his debut in 2020 and has been involved in more goals than any other Premier League players (79 - 45 goals, 34 assists).
Ronaldo helped his side take the lead soon after the start of the second half, but Martin Odegaard equalized soon after. However, the Portuguese secured his side’s victory with his second goal in the 70th minute.
Carrick added on his decision to walk away:
"You have got to go all in. Since I walked through the doors here. It's pure dedication, and the club takes over your life.
"There's no getting away from your head anymore. It's everywhere. For the good and the bad. But that's... you take that. Being here the highs and lows are extreme. I've had a bit of both. A period of both.
"The players have obviously done the same now in recent times. I have to say I have enjoyed it, I have enjoyed it, what's next I don't know. But I have to say, I have enjoyed it as the weeks gone on."
