Lothar Matthaus criticized Ballon d'Or votes

Despite the exceptional performance of the Polish star, Lionel Messi once again won the Ballon d'Or.

Bayern Munich

legend Lothar Matthaus has claimed that he no longer understands the world after

Robert Lewandowski

lost to

Lionel Messi

for the Ballon d'Or.

Robert Lewandowski was expected to win the Ballon d'Or last night after a brilliant 12 months with Bayern Munich, but Lionel Messi won the title for the seventh time. The 33-year-old Bayern striker has scored 53 goals in 42 games, of which 15 have been scored this season. He scored one goal every 67 minutes and also broke Gerd Müller's record in the Bundesliga with 41 goals. Matthaus now criticized the votes for the Ballon d'Or, calling Lewandowski worthy of the title.

The German Legend said:

"To be honest, after this vote, I don't understand the world anymore.

"With all due respect to Messi and the other great nominated players, nobody deserves it like Lewandowski."

Bayern Munich CEO Oliver Kahn also stressed that Lewandowski deserved the Ballon d'Or more than Messi. He added:

"Lewandowski deserved the Ballon d'Or just as much as his top scorer trophy because he has performed at the highest level for years. But congratulations nonetheless to Lionel Messi.

"Even without the Ballon d'Or, Lewy has long since arrived as one of the Olympus of football greats. He will still be a Ballon d'Or contender in the years to come."
