Ben White left the field due to illness not injury - Arteta

The English defender could not stay on the field for a long time.

After

Arsenal

2-0 win over Leeds United in the EFL Cup, Gunners boss Mikel Arteta has claimed that Ben White was subtituted because of ilness rather than injury.

While Arsenal defender Pablo Mari was unable to play, Arteta was forced to use Ben White in his starting line-up. But the English defender was

compelled

to leave the pitch minutes after the start of the second half, and the Spanish coach claimed that he had no choice other than using him in the starting line-up, but the English defender will have no problem playing in the Premier League against Leicester City.

Arteta told Sky Sports:

"[Mari] was going to start and he couldn’t – he had a bug, something happened around here. White wasn’t feeling great in the second half so we decided to take him off."

Calum Chambers came on for White and scored Arsenal's first goal a minute after he came on. Asked if his substitutions have ever responded so quickly, Arteta said:

"I don't think so.

"I’m so happy in particular for Calum. He totally deserved it. It was a great moment because it helped us to win the game. He’s someone who deserves the best for who he is as a person and how he behaves as a professional."
