Gimenez returns to Atletico after injury on international duty
The Uruguayan defender was forced to leave La Celeste's squad after suffering a hip injury on Friday.
Uruguay were held to a goalless draw in their World Cup qualifier against Colombia on Friday. La Celeste suffered an injury blow in the 60th minute as Jose Gimenez was forced off the pitch with a hip problem.
According to
Marca, the Atletico Madrid defender will leave Uruguay’s squad to start his recovery process in Madrid. The La Liga champions are expected to give an update on the 26-year-old’s injury once he undergoes further tests.
Being a cornerstone of Atletico’s backline, Gimenez has featured in all of the Rojiblancos’ matches so far this season. The versatile center-back will miss Uruguay’s crucial matches against Argentina and Brazil, with Barcelona’s
Ronald Araujobeing his most likely replacement in the national team’s lineup.
Atletico Madrid will face Granada in their first match after the international break, before meeting Liverpool in the Champions League. It remains to be seen whether Gimenez will miss any of Atletico’s upcoming games.
