Phil Neville: Beckham told me to be harder on Romeo than anyone else

The Three Lions legend’s son made his professional debut for Fort Lauderdale on Sunday.

Having joined

Fort Lauderdale

in September,

Romeo Beckham

made his professional

debut

in his side’s 2-2 draw against Tormenta on Sunday. The 19-year-old, who has spent time in the academy ranks of Arsenal, is determined to follow the footsteps of his father. However, Inter Miami boss Phil Neville says the young striker must work harder than his teammates to be included in the lineup.

"The first thing that David said to me was, 'You have got to be harder on him than anyone else',”

he told a press conference.

"He has got to work harder than anyone else to get into that team because there will be questions, there will be expectations on his shoulders."

Asked about Romeo’s performance in his debut, Neville responded:

"I thought he did really well.

"I think the measure of his performance was that he was only planned to play 45 minutes, and he played nearly 80 minutes because he is a boy that is hungry.

"He has got a lot of pressure and expectations on his shoulders, but what he has got is he has got his feet firmly on the ground.

"He knows he has got a lot of development to do, and he has got all the right attributes, character, determination, good person, to have a really good opportunity of making it in professional football."

Neville’s own son Harvey is also working to get a spot in the team’s squad.

"He knows when he is in this football club he is no different than any other player, and it is the same with Romeo,"

Neville added.

Having collected 27 points from their 23 games, Fort Lauderdale is currently eighth in the USL League One. Romeo will have the chance to play his second professional game in his side’s battle against Greenville Triumph on Saturday.
