Jordan’s Taekwando silver medallist happy to see Russian friend’s gold

Jordan’s taekwondo silver medallist Saleh Elsharabaty congratulated Maksim Khramtcov's victory in their 80kg final.

to win the men’s taekwondo -80kg gold medal on Monday.

Despite losing the final fight, Elsharabaty is happy to see Russian won the gold medal around his neck

"He is so strong,"

the 22-year-old said.

"I've trained with him a lot in Jordan; we are like brothers.

"I am really happy for him and I am happy with the silver this time. In (the Paris Games in 2024) I want the gold,"

he said

Elsharabaty’s path to the silver medal saw him beat

Ordemann

5-4 in the round of 16,

Achraf Mahboubi

of Morocco 17-15 in the quarterfinal, and

Nikita Rafalovich

of Uzbekistan 13-11 in the semifinal.

In the final, he came up against a formidable opponent in

Khramtcov

and the Russian easily won the match 20-9.

After the final buzzer, both athletes held each other. After the requisite post-match fist-bump with the opposing teams' coaches, they gave each other a second hug.

Khramtcov lost his mom six months ago and winning the gold medal was a special moment for him.

"I never thought of giving up,"

he said when asked how he coped with the loss

"My mother wanted to see a gold medal in my hands so I had to come to get it. Now I have it round my neck for her."
