Bristol Rovers boss Barton accused of assaulting his wife

The ex-Premier League footballer pleaded not guilty to the accusation of assaulting his wife.

Joey Barton

was present at Wimbledon Magistrates' Court on Monday via video link. The 38-year-old is charged with assaulting his wife in an incident that saw Georgia suffer a head injury.

It was reported that the

Bristol Rovers

manager grabbed his wife by the throat and kicked her in the head in a fight they had outside their property, with two friends present.

Her nose was bleeding after the incident and she told the court that she called the police and asked for Barton to be taken out of the property.

Barton had previously played for Manchester City, Newcastle, Queen's Park Rangers and Marseille.

He then started his management role, being the boss of Fleetwood Town from 2018 to 2021 before making a move to Bristol Rovers this year.

The manager was let out on unconditional bail until the day of his trial at Wimbledon Magistrates' Court on December 16.
