Lewandowski named Germany’s Footballer of the Year

The Poland international received an award for his performance in the 2020-21 season that contributed to Bayern Munich’s ninth Bundesliga title grab.

Robert Lewandowski

received Germany’s Footballer of the Year award for a second season before

Thomas Muller

and

Erling Haaland

.

The Polish striker’s first award came in the 2019-20 season as he fired

Bayern Munich

to the treble and now, he has been able to keep up with that in their latest campaign.

The 32-year-old’s astonishing performance has sealed Bayern their Bundesliga title for the ninth year. Lewandowski has also broken Gerd Muller's 49-year-old scoring record in the competition.

"

I know how big this honour is,"

he said.

"For me, it is a reason for great pride and joy, because you rarely win the title of 'Footballer of the Year' twice in a row in Germany."

He met the back of the net 48 times in 48 matches for Bayern last season, with 41 of them being in the Bundesliga.

The Polish even returned from a ligament injury to find the target six times in their final four matches of the season.

"

Of course I am happy that I scored 41 goals in 29 Bundesliga games,"

he added.

"This number of goals fills me with great pride and is certainly a spectacular performance in view of my injury."

Germany’s 2020-21 Coach of the Year award was given to

Thomas Tuchel

ahead of Hansi Flick and Edin Terzic.

Tuchel delivered Champions League victory with

Chelsea

after he replaced Frank Lampard in January.

"

I accept the award very gratefully as a great honour for the entire team because I see myself as a team player,"

Tuchel said after receiving the prize.
