I didn't think Chiesa was so good – Buffon

Gianluigi Buffon admits that he had no idea ex-Juve teammate could play at ‘such a high level’.

Former

Juventus

goalkeeper,

Gianluigi Buffon

, has praised his ex-teammate

Federico Chiesa

after seeing his top-level performance for Italy in the Euro 2020 tournament.

Chiesa, who joined Juve in 2020 and managed to score 9 goals in his 33 appearances for the Bianconeri, also had a fantastic run with the Azzurri in the European championship.

The 23-year-old winger, whose stellar performance in the Euro 2020 final against England paved the way for Italy’s European glory, has now been hailed by ex-teammate and Juve legend, Gianluigi Buffon.

Buffon, who was surprised by Chiesa’s ‘unbelievable’ performance in the European tournament, told

Gazzetta dello Sport

:

“When he arrived at Juve I didn't think he was so good. I am honest. In the European Championship he was unbelievable, in the final match with England, it was impossible to stop him.

"After a season at Juve with Federico it is no longer a surprise for me, but it was not obvious that he would be able to play at such a high level in a tournament like the European Championship.

"If you do those things at such a high level, then it means that you are really special."
