Huntelaar and Kolasinac will leave Schalke 04
Schalke 04 have announced the departure of striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and defender Sead Kolasinac at the end of their contracts.
The Bundesliga 2 side decided not to renew
Huntelaar
and
Kolasinac
’s contracts.
The pair, who returned for a second spell at Schalke in January, will not extend their stay at Veltins-Arena following the club's relegation to the 2. Bundesliga.
The club had concluded that it did not want to extend the duo's contracts, which expired at the end of June.
Board member
Peter Knäbel
regretted the departure of the two veterans.
"On a sporting and personal front, it's a painful decision to have to make,"
explained Schalke board member for sport and communication
Peter Knäbel
and added
:
"Considering the current budget and squad structure – well-known challenges that have been openly discussed – there was no alternative.
"We also can't afford to spend weeks going back and forth given that we have a short pre-season and how quickly the new campaign will come about; we have to make decisions in Schalke 04’s best interests now. That is why this step is necessary."
