UEFA confirmed Super Cup will take place in Belfast

UEFA made the decision to hold the Super Cup final between Chelsea and Villarreal in Northern Ireland.

Although the Champions League final between Manchester City and Chelsea was supposed to be held in

Istanbul

, due to the coronavirus pandemic,

UEFA

decided to move the match to Portugal, according to

Sky Sports

.

The Turkish sports minister then claimed that their country would be compensated by being awarded hosting duties for the

Super Cup

final and the 2023 Champions League final.

Chelsea

and

Villarreal

are going to play against each other in the Super Cup final on August 11, after their Champions League and Europa League triumphs respectively.

It seems although UEFA strongly considered moving the August 11 fixture to Istanbul, they made their final decision to hold the contest at Windsor Park in Belfast.

Irish FA CEO Patrick Nelson said:

"We have kept in close contact with our partners at UEFA on the matter and following these discussions we are delighted that they have confirmed that the game will stay in Belfast.”

The details of the capacity and ticketing for the Super Cup final have yet to be decided and are expected to be announced nearer the fixture.

The match is going to be held on Wednesday before the opening weekend of the Premier League season.
