Fernandes has what United were looking for - Ferguson

The Portugal international has been Manchester United’s most productive player, but the ex-manager believes he is capable of more than just goals.

Sir Alex Ferguson

has praised

Bruno Fernandes

and believes he is a ‘fantastic’ player for the Red Devils.

The 26-year-old has been playing a key role at Old Trafford since he joined

Manchester United

in 2020.

The midfielder is on top of the chart for the club’s goal and assists during this campaign, helping them seal a finish in the top four and a place in the Europa League final.

The Portuguese’s influence at United has impressed Ferguson, who believes he is providing what the club have long been searching for.

Well, he’s been fantastic the lad,”

Ferguson said to

BBC Radio Manchester

.

“He’s scored important goals and even when he’s taking his penalty kicks he’s very, very confident about them and I can’t even think if a goalkeeper’s got anywhere near his penalty kicks.

“So he’s calm, his shots from outside the box are always a threat and he’s got the thing that United have really needed in the last few years with his ability to make a pass in the final third.

“It opens up defences and I think that’s important.”

Fernandes met the back of the net 28 times and contributed 17 assists across all competitions this season.

The Portugal international had a crucial role in United securing the Europe League final when he scored a brace and set up another two goals during their thumping 6-2 victory over Roma in the semi-final.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side will end the

Premier League

season on Sunday when they go against Wolves. They will face Villarreal on May 26.
