‘It was a step up’ Martinez happy to have left Arsenal for Aston Villa

Former Arsenal goalkeeper is satisfied about his transfer to Villa Park.

Emiliano Martinez joined Aston Villa from Arsenal with a reported £20million deal after having a successful 2019-20 season with Gunners. Martinez has continued his high-quality performances in the current season as he has kept more clean sheets (4) than any other keeper in the Premier League. The Argentinean also has a save percentage of 71 which puts him in the second rank after Karl Darlow from Newcastle. In Aston Villa’s Sunday clash against Arsenal Martinez managed to keep another clean sheet as his former club was stunned by a 3-0 defeat in the Villa Park. In a post-match interview Martinez has spoken about his decision to join Aston Villa and his future at the club.

"When I decided to come to Villa it was because I trusted in the manager's ambitions, I trusted the club's ambitions and I knew how big Villa is. People don't realise how big Aston Villa is,

"They were all saying it's a step down in my career and I always said it's a step up for my career.

"We're going to have a really good season hopefully, we're going to keep fighting for every game, for every ball, and hopefully we are in the top 10 in the table.

"I said since day one my ambition is to be in Europe with Aston Villa," Martinez said.

"I want to take this club as high as possible and we're on the right path.

Aston Villa will host Brighton on November 21 in their first match after the International break.
