top scorer in EPL 2021/22

season.

Of course, we should wait and see what course the English league takes in the coming months, but that’s that! They are, at least by now, which is about two months from the start of the new season, a top scorer and may or may not hold their position as a top scorer in EPL 2021/22 season.

The list of Premier League top scorers in 2020/21 season starts with Harry Kane of Tottenham Hotspur with 23 goals in the passed season, but what about the rest of the list? Stay with us to know.

Harry Kane (23 Goals)

’s beloved 28-year-old forward who not only scored the most number of goals in the Premier League 2020/21 season but also registered the best goal-to-appearance ratio in the same season - at least among the first ten top scorers of the season: 0.66 which comes from the 23 goals that Kane scored in his 35 appearances during the season meaning that he actually scored a little more than one goal (exactly 1.22) in every two appearances.

However, considering the number of shots and their accuracy, Kane is not actually topping the list since there are other top scorers on the list with better records. Kane actually shot 137 times during the Premier League 2020/21 season from which 53 (38.6%) were on target and 9 (6.5%) hit the woodwork.

If we just measure his shots-on-target-to-goal conversion ratio in the past season, that will be 2.30 which comes from the 23 of his shots converted to goal from his total of 53 shots meaning that on average one shot from every 2.30 shots Kane had in the past season were converted to goal which is not a bad record. It should also be mentioned here that 4 (17.3%) of Kane’s goals in the previous season were actually headed goals and 4 were scored from the penalty spot. So, that means his non-penalty goals are actually 19.

Mohamed Salah (22 Goals)

Very near to Harry Kane in terms of his goalscoring records,

is actually the second top scorer in the Premier League 2020/21 season who, by this date (September 19, 2021), is also a top scorer in EPL 2021/22 season - actually the first top scorer - with 4 goals alongside Bruno Fernandes of Manchester United and Michail Antonio of West Ham United.

As we mentioned above, if you compare Mohamed Salah’s goalscoring and shots record to that of Harry Kane in the previous season, they are very near to each other. Salah scored 22 goals (vs Kane’s 23 goals) in 37 appearances (vs Kane’s 35 appearances) which gets him a goal-to-appearance ratio of 0.59 which means he also scored a little more than one goal (exactly 1.18 vs Kane’s 1.22) in every two appearances during the past season. Salah had 126 shots (vs Kane’s 137 shots) in the past season from which 52 (37.9%) were on target and only 1 hit the woodwork.

And from the 22 goals Salah scored 2 (9%) were headed goals and 6 (27.2%) were scored from the penalty spot which means he actually scored only 16 non-penalty goals in the previous season. It should be mentioned here that Salah was a gentleman in the previous season, too, since he never received a yellow or red card despite committing 22 fouls.

Bruno Fernandes (18 Goals)

The only Portuguese footballer on the list of Premier League top scorers in 2020/21 season, Bruno Fernandes is a 27-year-old forward who’s been serving Manchester United since 2020. Although 2020-21 season was Fernandes’ first season with

, he managed to become Premier League’s third top scorer in the same season with 18 goals, however, it might interesting for you to know that half of these goals were scored from the penalty spot, so if we compare his non-penalty goals to other footballers on the list, he actually falls even lower than 10th position since all the other footballers on the list except for Jamie Vardy have scored more non-penalty goals than him.

Ok, let’s get to Fernandes’ goal-to-appearance ratio and shots records in the previous season: Fernandes scored his 18 goals in 37 appearances which gets him a goal-to-appearance ratio of 0.49 meaning that he scored almost one goal (exactly 0.98) in every two appearances in the past season. Fernandes’ shots records are almost near those of Kane and Salah: He shot 121 times during the past season from which 51 were on target and 3 hit the woodwork. Based on that, Fernandes converted 35% of his shots on target (18 out of 51) to goals which means from every 3 shots he fired a little bit more than one (exactly 1.05) was converted to goal.

Patrick Bamford (17 Goals)

The second English footballer on the list of Premier League top scorers in 2020/21 season after Harry Kane,

is Leeds United’s 28-year-old forward who’s been serving the club since 2018. He was not even among Premier League’s first 20 top scorers in 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons, however, it seems that he made quite an improvement in 2020-21 season to finish as the top English league’s 4th top scorer with 17 goals from which only 2 were scored from the penalty spot - in this respect, he’s even in front of Bruno Fernandes who scored half of his 18 goals from the penalty spot.

Well, let’s get to Patrick Bamford’s goal-to-appearance ratio and shots records: Bramford actually scored his 17 goals in the past season in 38 appearances which gets him a goal-to-appearance ratio of 0.45 meaning that the 28-year-old English forward scored almost one goal (exactly 0.9) in every two appearances that he made for the Whites. He sent 107 shots in the past season from which 48 (44.8%) were on target and from these shots, as you know, 17 (35.4%) were converted to goal. Also 4 of these shots - total shots we mean - hit the woodwork and from 17 goals that Bamford scored 2 were headed goals.

Son Heung-Min (17 Goals)

, Son Heung-Min is also the only Asian footballer among the Premier League’s previous season top 10 scorers or, better said, the only Asian footballer who has managed to finish among the Premier League top 10 scorers in the history of the competition, in fact to this date - by Asian, we mean from Asian nations and not the countries that are a member of AFC, otherwise, we should also mention Mark Viduka who has done the same a couple of times.

Well, let’s get to Heung-Min’s goalscoring and shots records; Son Heung-Min scored all his 17 goals in Premier League 2020/21 season in 37 appearances which gets him a goal-to-appearance ratio of 0.46 meaning that the Korean footballer scored almost one goal (exactly 0.92) in every two appearances in the past season. And from all the 17 goals Heung-Min scored in the previous season only 1 (5.8%) was scored  from the penalty spot and one was a headed goal. He also sent 68 shots 36 (52.9%) of which were on target and 5 hit the woodwork. Just like Mohamed Salah, Heung-Min also received no yellow or red cards during the past season.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (16 Goals)

Although not the tallest footballer at least among the first 10 Premier League top scorers in the previous season - He’s shorter than Harry Kane by a centimeter or so, Calvert-Lewin is actually the one with the most number of headed goals among these first 10: 7 out of 16 goals which, as you see, is almost the half of all the goals he scored in the previous season.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored all his 16 goals in 33 appearances during the past season which gets him a goal-to-appearance ratio of 0.48 meaning that the 24-year-old English forward scored almost one goal (exactly 0.96) in every two appearances. He also shot 83 times during the previous season 46 (55.4%) of which were on target and only one of which hit the woodwork. And none of Calvert-Lewin’s goals in the past season were scored from the penalty spot. He also received 3 yellow cards but from 37 fouls that he committed.

Jamie Vardy (15 Goals)

Premier League’s top scorer in 2019-20 season with 23 goals, Jamie Vardy, could not live up to expectations in the season after and just sufficed to 7th position among the Premier League top scorers in 2020/21 season with 15 goals. He scored all his 15 goals in 34 appearances in the same season (2020/21) which gets him a goal-to-appearance ratio of 0.44 meaning that the 34-year-old English forward scored near one goal (exactly 0.88) in every two appearances that he made in the past season.

And if you know that from all the 15 goals Vardy scored in the previous season more than half of them - actually 8 - were scored from the penalty spot, you may not rank him better than Bruno Fernandes who also registered almost the same stats concerning the ratio of his goals scored from the penalty spot to all his goals. That means only 7 of Vardy’s goals were non-penalty and if we were to rank him based on his non-penalty goals, then he would also fall lower than 10th position on the list.

Vardy also shot 82 times in the previous season 38 (46.3%) of which were on target and from these shots, as you know, 15 (39.4%) were converted to goal and only 7 (18.4%) were converted from the non-penalty shots. He also scored one headed goal and received 1 yellow card but from 26 fouls that he committed during the past season.

Ollie Watkins (14 Goals)

2020-21 season was actually Watkins’ first season in the Premier League, despite this, he finished the season among the first top 10 scorers of the league - actually 8th - which is appreciable. Before that - we mean 2020-21 season, Watkins served lower-tier English clubs, Exeter City,

, and Brentford, before he actually joined Aston Villa in 2020. He scored 14 goals in the past season but in 40 appearances which gets him the lowest goal-to-appearance ratio among the first 10 top scorers of the league in the same season: 0.35 which means he scored around one goal in every 3 appearances.

And how many shots did Watkins send during the past season? Well, the number is 105 and from all these 105 shots 49 (46.6%) were on target from which 14 (28.5%) were converted to goal with 3 of these goals being headed goals and one scored from the penalty spot. Watkins is actually the first and only footballer at least among the Premier League first 10 top scorers in 2020/21 season to have received a red card during the past season. He also collected 2 yellow cards from the 49 fouls he committed in the same season.

Ilkay Gundogan (13 Goals)

The interesting fact about Gundogan is that the number of goals he scored in 2020/21 season almost equals the number of goals he scored from 2016 to 2020: He scored 15 goals in 4 seasons between 2016 and 2020 and 13 goals in just one single season which is actually the 2020/21 season.

You might think that in those 4 seasons between 2016 and 2020

was mostly sidelined and didn’t have enough opportunities for goalscoring. If so, we should say you’re wrong, because he actually made more or less the same number of appearances in those seasons as he did in 2020/21 season. Looks like he had a real performance in the previous season.

Well, let’s get to Gundogan’s goalscoring and shots records; Gundogan scored all his 13 goals in the previous season in 28 appearances which gets him a goal-to-appearance ratio of 0.46 meaning that the German midfielder scored almost one goal (exactly 0.92) in every two appearances. He also sent 54 shots from which 22 (40.7%) were on target and from these shots, as you see, 13 (59%) were converted to goal; not a bad record for a midfielder; he actually converted near 60% of his shots to goal.

And to let you know more about Gundogan’s goal stats in the previous season, we should say that one of his 13 goals was scored from the penalty spot and one was a headed goal. He also made 8 fouls which is almost low in comparison to other footballers on the list and collected one yellow card from them.

Alexandre Lacazette (13 Goals)

Lacazette scored all his 13 goals in the previous season in 31 appearances which gets him a goal-to-appearance ratio of 0.42 meaning that the 30-year-old French forward scored 1.2 goals in every 3 appearances. He also shot 45 times during the past season from which 29 (64.4%) were on target, and from these shots on target, as you see, 13 (44.8%) were converted to goal. Also from 13 goals that Lacazette scored 2 were headed goals and 3 were scored from the penalty spot. He also received 3 yellow cards from the 37 fouls he committed throughout the season.
