Liverpool

history and the players who could be considered as Liverpool’s top players of all time.

The List of the Best Liverpool Players Ever

Here comes a list of the Greatest Liverpool Players Ever, with Steven Gerrard topping the list. But what about the rest of the list? Read on to know!

Steven Gerrard

Undoubtedly the

best Liverpool player ever

, Steven Gerrard is actually a product of Liverpool and has played all his footballing career for the Premier League club except for one season (2015-16) that he played for LA Galaxy. The great Liverpool player was born in May 1980 (Aged 40) in Whiston, Merseyside, England, and played all his career as a midfielder.

Steven Gerrard is not the only Liverpool footballer but also the only footballer in the world who has scored in four major European competitions finals, namely FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Cup, and

UEFA Champions League

, winning on each occasion.

He was also considered as the best footballer in the world in 2009 by the football legends, Pele and Zinedine Zidane.

In terms of the number of appearances for the England national team in its history, Steven Gerrard ranks fourth with 114 appearances he made for the team from 2000 to 2014. He also scored 21 goals for his country’s national team during the process.

Besides being one of the greatest Liverpool players of all time, Gerrard is also among the most honored English players too with more than 25 titles and trophies to his name.

Gerrard is the winner of FA England Player of the Year Award in 2007 and 2012, FIFA Club World Cup Silver Ball in 2005, and UEFA Club Footballer of the Year Award in the same year.

He was also named in the

Premier League

Team of the Year for 8 seasons, Liverpool Player of the Season for 4 seasons, and in MLS All-Star Team in 2015, the same year he played for the American club, LA Galaxy.

And all these are just a few of the 40-year-old English midfielder honors! He’s also an abductee of English Football Hall of Fame, and is a member of the Order of British Empire for his services to football.

He has also captained Liverpool more than any other player in the club’s history (473 times), and is the top Liverpool scorer in UEFA Champions League with 30 goals scored in the competition history. With all these honors and records, don’t you agree that he deserves to be the best Liverpool player ever?

Kenny Dalglish

The second

best Liverpool player ever

, Sir Kenneth Mathieson Dalglish, simply known as Kenny Dalglish, is actually a Scottish footballer who served Liverpool for more than half of his footballing career. And in the lesser half he served

Celtic

. In fact, he only served the two above-mentioned clubs during his career.

He also appeared more than a hundred times - actually 102 - for the Scottish national team between 1971 and 1986 scoring 31 goals for them in the process (almost one goal in every three appearances), and by doing so, not only he became the most capped Scottish footballer ever - he’s still - but also Scotland’s leading goalscorer, in fact, jointly with another top Scottish footballer, Denis Law.

Dalglish is one of those footballers who have managed the team they played for during their career as a player. He has actually managed Liverpool from 1985 to 1991 and in 2011-12 season.

He is also an inductee of both Scottish and English Football Halls of Fame and became a member of the Order of British Empire, just like Steven Gerrard, in 1985 for his services to football. As a manager, he was also named as the

Premier League

Manager of the Season in 1994-95 season.

With

Liverpool

, Dalglish won 6 consecutive Football League First Division titles - the highest tier in the English football league system before the formation of the Premier League - from 1978 to 1986.

He was also named in FIFA 100 List which is actually a list of the greatest living footballers chosen by the Brazilian legend, Pele, in 2004. Could he be one of the Liverpool top players of all time? For sure!

Steve Mcmanaman

Known for his perfect dribbling ability and accurate passing, Steve Mcmanaman is one of the

top players in Liverpool history

and the first English player to have won the UEFA Champions League with a non-English club, namely Real Madrid.

Although having served

Real Madrid

and

Manchester City

during his footballing career, it was with Liverpool that Mcmanaman made the most number of appearances: 272 appearances which is almost three times more than the 94 appearances he has made for Real Madrid.

And the 48-year-old former English midfielder has scored most of his club career goals for Liverpool, too, namely 46 goals which are, this time, almost six times higher than the goals he has scored for Real Madrid.

So by all these records, we can consider him more a Liverpool player than a Real Madid one, although he has also won two

LaLiga

titles, one Spanish Super Cup, and two UEFA Champions League titles with the Spanish side.

Mcmanaman is actually a product of

Liverpool

. He was promoted to Liverpool’s senior team in 1990 and in just one year became a member of the English club’s first-team squad.

During his spell with Liverpool, Mcmanaman developed a reputation of being one of the top young English wingers of his own time, and indeed, he was. He was not only a good dribbler but also a good runner.

Kevin Keegan, who is also considered as one of the Liverpool top players ever, once said about Mcmanaman: “There are few finer sights in world football than the sight of Steve McManaman running down the length of the pitch.”

John Barnes

One of the most beloved and indeed

best Liverpool players of all time

, John Barnes is not originally an English footballer - as many think he is maybe because of his first name being John - but a Jamaican one, though he has also the citizenship of England meaning that he could have and actually have played for the England national team (between 1983 and 1995).

Barnes, whose complete name is John Charles Bryan Barnes, has only played for English clubs during his footballing career, and has served

Liverpool

more than any other English club with 314 appearances he made for them. During his spell with Liverpool, Barnes also scored 84 goals which translates to a little bit more than one goal in every 4 appearances.

But goals don’t matter since Barnes was also a beloved footballer! Barnes ranked fifth in a 2006 poll held to determine the Liverpool fans’ most favorite players. He was also named the

best Liverpool player of all time

by FourFourTwo Magazine a year later, and had already been inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame a year before, in 2005.

Like Steven Gerrard and Kenny Dalglish, John Barnes is also a member of the Order of British Empire for his services to football. The 56-year-old Jamaican-English winger was also named PFA Players' Player of the Year in 1988 and in PFA Team of the Century in 2007. And when with Liverpool, he won two First Division titles, two FA Cups, and one League Cup.

Jamie Carragher

Among few players in Liverpool history to have made more than 500 appearances for the English club, Jamie Carragher is not only a product of Liverpool but also has played all his club career for the same club.

That justifies his more than 500 appearances! Carragher was also a member of England national team between 1999 and 2010 and appeared 38 times for them during his international career.

Considered as one of the

best players in the history of Liverpool

, Carragher actually played as a defender for the English club and won a handful of trophies with them including two FA Cups, three League Cups, and two UEFA Super Cups.

He was also named Liverpool Player of the Season in 1999 and 2005, and in the

Premier League

Team of the Year in 2005-06 season.

The 42-year-old former England and Liverpool defender is not only among few Liverpool players to have made more than 500 appearances for the English club, but also is a record holder in terms of the number of appearances (150) he has made for the club in European competitions.

Ian Rush

Considered as one of the

best Liverpool players ever

, Ian James Rush, simply known as Ian Rush, served Liverpool for two third of his footballing career, namely from 1980 to 1986 and from 1988 to 1996 after a short spell with

Juventus

 in 1987-88 season.

Rush made the most number of appearances for Liverpool during his career, namely 469 appearances, and scored 229 goals during his service to the English club (almost one goal in every two appearances).

So, the 58-year-old retired Welsh forward is best known for being a Liverpool player - and indeed star - rather than other clubs, although he also served clubs like

Leeds United

and Newcastle United during his footballing career.

In regard to the number of appearances Rush made for Liverpool and the number of goals he has scored for the club during career, there are still sources that say he made more than 500 appearances and scored 346 goals for the English club.

What almost all sources agree upon is the number of goals he has scored for Liverpool (346). In fact, Rush is the highest goalscorer ever in the history of Liverpool.

He also earned the title of Liverpool Top Goalscorer in 8 seasons during his service to the club, not to mention that he also won European Golden Boot and First Division Golden Boot both in 1984 and was named in PFA Team of the Century in 2007.

Robbie Fowler

Among the

best Liverpool players ever

, Robbie Fowler is a retired English footballer who played most of his footballing career for Liverpool. The 45-year-old striker is a product of Liverpool and has played not only for Liverpool but also for eight other clubs - most of them English - including

Manchester City

, Leeds United and Cardiff City during his career.

However, as mentioned above, Fowler has made the most number of appearances, namely 236, for Liverpool which is actually 3 to 10 times higher than any other club that he has played for during his career.

He has also scored the most number of goals in his career for Liverpool: 128 goals which count for two third of all the goals he has scored during his career (180) and translates to one goal in every two appearances the English striker has made for Liverpool.

A Liverpool-born footballer (city of Liverpool), Fowler also made 26 appearances for the England national team between 1996 and 2002 scoring 7 goals in the process - a little more than one goal in every appearance.

He was also named the

Premier League

Player of the Month in two consecutive months, namely December 1995, and January 1996, and won the UEFA Fair Play Award in 1997.

Alan Hansen

A tall Scottish defender - he’s 188 cm, Alan Hansen played all his footballing career for Liverpool except for 4 years between 1973 and 1977 that he played for the Scottish club, Partick Thistle.

Hansen was actually part of the Liverpool team who reaped several English and European awards in 1970s and 80s. He also appeared 26 times for the Scottish national team in 1980s.

Some of the trophies Hansen won with

Liverpool

include eight First Division titles, two FA Cups, four League Cups, three European Cups and one UEFA Super Cup. He was also inducted into English Football Hall of Fame in 2006, and a year later, in 2007, into Scottish Football Hall of Fame.

The 65-year-old retired Scottish defender was also named on the list of Football League 100 Legends which is a list of 100 great footballers who have played part or all of their footballing career in the English football.

Unlike some other great Liverpool players like John Barnes and Kenny Dalglish who continued their footballing career as a manager, Hansen has never managed a team, although he was offered to by two English clubs,

Huddersfield Town

and Manchester City in 1992 and 1995, respectively. The reason why he turned down those managerial offers was quite simple: He was just not interested in coaching.

Michael Owen

One of the most beloved and

greatest players in the history of Liverpool

and England, Michael James Owen, simply known as Michael Owen, is not only a product of Liverpool but also has played most of his footballing career for the English club.

And he has also scored the most number of goals in his career for them: 118 goals in his 216 appearances for the club which translates to a little more than one goal in every two appearances.

Owen has also made the most number of appearances for Liverpool, namely 3 to 7 times more than other clubs he played for during his career and his goalscoring records with the English club during this time are even better: 4 to 9 times more than other clubs he served.

He actually scored 118 goals for Liverpool while his best record with other clubs, specifically Newcastle United, is only 26, not to mention that he has scored only 5 goals for

Manchester United

in his 31 appearances for them.

So, with all the appearances and goals Owen has scored for Liverpool, one can easily say that the 40-year-old retired English striker was and is best remembered as a Liverpool player, and indeed star. He’s the only player in Liverpool history to have won the Ballon d'Or Award when playing for the English club, actually in 2001.

He’s also the winner of Premier League Golden Boot in two consecutive seasons, namely 1997-98 and 1998-99 seasons, and was named the Premier League Player of the Season in the former season.

Kevin Keegan

Maybe not among the players who served Liverpool for all or most of their careers, but Kevin Keegan has served Liverpool more than any other club during his career - actually for six years and at least twice more than other clubs - and has performed the best with the English club in his 230 appearances for them.

Playing as a forward, Keegan has actually scored 68 goals for Liverpool when he was at the club’s service which means almost one goal in every three appearances.

Keegan is the winner of two Ballon d'Or awards in 1978 and 1979, but during that time he was not a Liverpool player - he served the Bundesliga side,

Hamburger SV

, so that doesn’t count as one of the English club’s honors.

He’s also on the list of FIFA 100 like Michael Owen, and was inducted into English Football Hall of Fame (in 2002), again like Owen! The 69-year-old retired English striker was also named PFA Players' Player of the Year in 1981-82 when he was serving

Southampton

.
