Mbappe's Meteoric Rise Comes with Astronomical Costs

In a Transfer Without a Price Tag, Mbappe's Move to Los Blancos Sparks Debate Over Football's Financial Future

Real Madrid has confirmed the transfer of Kylian Mbappe, who joins the club as a free agent after letting his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expire. Despite no transfer fee, Mbappe's deal includes a substantial signing bonus and a high salary, a combination that Max Eberl believes other clubs couldn't match.

Max Eberl of Bayern Munich shared his thoughts in an interview with Suddeutsche Zeitung, stating, "You can always become more money-driven, but being overly greedy will eventually damage football. If all the money drains from the market, we won't have anything left to sustain the business. We're dealing with sums in the hundreds of millions, which is excessive and gives the impression that it will eventually collapse.

Eberl continued, "There will come a point when the market becomes oversaturated, and places like Saudi Arabia will take over. It’s an unsettling prospect, but that's the reality of the current market. The money is leaving the clubs' cycle, benefiting players, families, and agents, but not the clubs themselves. In the past, at least clubs saw some financial gains, but that is diminishing."

includes a significant yearly post-tax salary of €15 million, making him the highest-paid player on the team. Despite taking a €10 million pay cut from his PSG salary, Mbappe will still receive an impressive €150 million signing bonus, distributed over his five-year contract.

The French forward will officially join Real Madrid after the Euros, aiming to secure the only major international trophy that has eluded him so far.
