Kepa: "Pochettino wanted me to stay at Chelsea"

Kepa Arrizabalaga joined Real Madrid on a loan deal from Chelsea.

Real Madrid

announced that Kepa had been transferred from Chelsea on a one-year loan in August 2023. The decision was made in response to Thibaut Courtois, their starting goalkeeper, suffering a long-term injury.

Kepa reportedly told Marca that Mauricio Pochettino, the Chelsea manager, wanted him to stay at the team.

“Everything happened very fast. It’s true that Pochettino wanted me to stay at Chelsea and told me that I was going to play, and that he trusted me. However, I thought a change would suit me. I wanted a change. Thomas Tuchel called me. I was close to going to Bayern Munich."

he said.

“In the end, Real Madrid is Real Madrid. When Real Madrid calls you, you don’t have to think twice. It is a great joy and an exciting challenge.”

He joined Chelsea from Athletic Bilbao in 2018 and played 163 matches for Chelsea.
