Guardiola questions the validity of judging his success at City with Champions League titles

Pep Guardiola believes that his success at City will be judged by his UCL titles but he totally disagrees with that

Pep Guardiola acknowledges that Manchester City's success in winning the Champions League will be a significant factor in evaluating his tenure at the club, but he does not believe that it should be the sole criterion.

When Pep Guardiola joined Manchester City in 2016, he was seen as the man who could take the club to new heights, having won two Champions League titles with Barcelona and three Bundesliga titles with Bayern Munich. However, while Guardiola acknowledges that his time at City will ultimately be judged on whether or not he can win the Champions League, he doesn't necessarily agree with this assessment.

Speaking in a press conference ahead of City's Champions League last-16 second leg against RB Leipzig, Guardiola agreed he will 'absolutely be judged' for how he fares in Europe with City. He added:

"Because since day one when I arrived here, the first game in the Champions League they asked me, just arrived sitting here for the first time, 'you are here to win the Champions League'.

"I said 'what?' If I was manager of Real Madrid - that isn't going to happen - I could understand. But here, I don't know [if it's possible]. But I accept it."

Since taking over as

Manchester City

's manager, Guardiola has led the team to dominate domestically, winning two consecutive Premier League titles and currently in contention for a third this season. However, in European competition, City have failed to achieve the same level of success, with their only appearance in the Champions League final ending in defeat to Chelsea in 2021.
