Police confirm 3 arrests for a chant in Liverpool and Chelsea clash
Three men have been arrested for allegedly singing homophobic chants during Liverpool's Saturday draw with Chelsea.
The 'rent boy' chant has long been sung by opposition fans in
Chelseafixtures as it was finally condemned by the FA for its homophobic nature. The chant has been classed as a hate crime by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), and the FA stipulates that the singing of the chant now will result in disciplinary action for clubs.
Now, Merseyside Police has confirmed three arrests have been made for homophobic chanting during
Liverpool's Premier League draw with Chelsea on Saturday.
Suspected of "homophobic intentional harassment alarm and distress", the three men are aged 23, 37, and 49. The 37-year-old has been bailed out, but the other two suspects will attend a voluntary interview.
Merseyside Police superintendent Paul Sutcliffe said:
"We'll not tolerate hate crime of any form. We'll bring to justice anyone found responsible for committing any offensive chanting.
"In this instance, if the three suspects are charged and found guilty for the offence, then we will be seeking football banning orders on them."
