Breaking: former Tottenham youngster Anton Walkes dies aged 25

After graduating from Tottenham academy, Walkes played for Portsmouth before heading to MLS and playing for Atlanta United and Charlotte FC. The latest club confirms the death of their star in a boat crash.

had played in MLS since 2020 when he joined Atlanta United from Portsmouth. Being selected in the 2021 MLS expansion draft, the English defender joined

Charlotte

for the 2022 season and made 23 league appearances.

Now Charlotte confirms the death of their English defender at the age of 25 after a boat crash in Miami on Wednesday. The player was given CPR and taken to hospital as he is believed to have been in Florida for his side's pre-season training camp.

"

Everyone at [the club] is devastated by the tragic passing of Anton Walkes,"

Charlotte’s Owner David Tepper said in a statement.

"He was a tremendous son, father, partner and teammate whose joyous approach to life touched everyone he met.

"Anton made those around him better people in all areas of life and represented Charlotte FC to the highest standard both on and off the pitch.

"He will be greatly missed by many and our thoughts and prayers are with Anton's family during this heart-breaking time. The club offers its full support to all those impacted during this period of mourning."
