Beth Mead sets a record by winning the Sports Personality of the Year
Gunners star Beth Mead becomes the first woman footballer that wins the Sports Personality of the Year award.
BBC has announced the winner of their 2022 Sports Personality of the Year and it is none other than Arsenal’s
Beth Mead.
Mead becomes the first footballer since Ryan Giggs (2009) who has won the prestigious award. She joins the likes of David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Paul Gascoigne and Bobby Moore as footballers who have won BBC’s annual award.
Mead delivered a series of spectacular performances in Euro 2022 as she helped England win their first trophy ever. Mead scored 6 and assisted another 5, helping her snatch up the Player of the Tournament award as well as the Golden Boot of Euro 2022.
Mead previously won
Arsenal’s Player of the 2021/22 Season award as well as BBC’s Woman Footballer of the Year award.
"For me, football's always been my first true love,"
Mead said as part of her SPOTY VT.
"My mum sacrificed so much; she worked two jobs to pay extra money for my dad to drive me to training. I wouldn't be where I am today without them.
"I know I'm not going to share all those moments with my mum for the rest of my life anymore. So to share that moment with her last summer was just incredible."
