Modric declares Croatia’s “ambitions are big” despite the Morocco draw

2018 World Cup runner-ups Croatia were held by Morocco on Wednesday but captain Luka Modric deems Croatia’s “ambitions are big”

Following Croatia’s goalless draw with

Morocco

, 2018 Ballon d’Or winner Luka Modric insisted that his team is not here “just to participate” and that Croatia will be aiming high.

Zlatko Dalic’s

Croatia

failed to score a goal for the first time in their 12 matches in the World Cup but they have been on a good run ever since exiting Euro 2020 against Spain, only losing once so far.

"As the World Cup progresses, Croatia will be better,"

Modric

told the press. "

We did not come here just to participate. Our ambitions are big, but we have to take it step by step.

"I don't want to be misunderstood - to reach the second round is not our only objective, just the first one. Our objectives are greater."

Despite the unceremonious draw, Modric himself set records as he became the first player ever to appear both in European Championship and the World Cup in 3 different decades, going as far back as the 2006 World Cup where he made 2 appearances for Croatia.

Croatia will go head-to-head with Canada who lost their opening match against Belgium despite a spirited performance.
