Martinez claims that Belgium ‘needed' the Egypt beating

2018’s third-placed Belgium were beaten by Egypt tonight and manager Martinez claims that his team May needed it.

While teams are gearing up to play in the World Cup by arranging friendlies, Belgium went on to face Egypt tonight but Salah’s men were able to bed the Red Devils 2-1.

Belgium

boss Roberto Martinez took some positives from the match but also pointed to the fact that perhaps his team needed the loss to wake up. Last World Cup’s semi-finalists has been deemed by many to be one of the favorites to go far in Qatar as well but Martinez’s team is showing signs of crack.

FIFA rankings’ second-placed team Belgium, was far from their best in their defeat against Egypt which prompted Martinez to express his assessments about his team to VTM after the loss.

"This was not the result or performance we wanted, but maybe we needed it.”

he said.

"We showed that we are waiting for the World Cup to start, but not that we are ready.

"We're going to have to make sure every player is ready for what it takes. Because you can't go to a tournament like that and expect to perform if you're not at your best."

Like many other managers, Martinez spoke against the lack of preparation time they have had for the World Cup, saying that a coach needs at least 5 weeks with his team before the World Cup.

Former Napoli star Dries Mertens who came on in the match as a sub, also was critical of their performance calling the result “not ideal”.
