Zidane calls Benzema the greatest French striker

Zinedine Zidane has praised Karim Benzema and named him the greatest French striker after he got his Ballon d’Or award.

Karim Benzema

received the Ballon d’Or award this week for the first time ever as he met the back of the net 44 times in 46 matches for Real Madrid in the 2021-22 season. He helped Los Blancos win the La Liga title as well as the Champions League.

Zinedine Zidane

praised the Real Madrid star and said:

"The best striker in the history of French football? Everyone has their favourite player. Some people will tell you it's Jean-Pierre Papin with his exceptional goals, others will talk about Michel Platini.

"For me, it's Karim, yes, because I've been around him and I know what he's worth. In any case, he deserves to be very high.

"I wish him to continue for a long time to go for records and to shine on the field, with Real Madrid and with the French team. He is capable of going even higher."

The Frenchman has had a five-year hiatus from France national team and missed out on his country’s 2018 World Cup victory. Therefore, he is fifth on the all-time scorer list, having netted 37 goals in 97 matches. The leader of the least is Thierry Henry with 51 goals. However, he hopes to help his country win the World Cup in Qatar this year.
