Putellas, Gavi, Courtois and Lewandowski wins at 2022 Ballon d'Or ceremony

The Ballon d'Or 2022 award ceremony took place at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris on Monday night.

The Ballon d'Or is back, and for the first time was judged on the course of a season rather than a calendar year. The Ballon d'Or, the Ballon d'Or Feminin, the Kopa Trophy, and the Yashin Trophy were awarded tonight in Paris.

The biggest name who has missed out on the nominations list was the seven-time winner Lionel Messi. Real Madrid star Karim Benzema was the favorite to win this year’s trophy while Alexia Putellas of Barcelona was expected to win the women's award.

Gavi

won the Kopa Trophy at tonight's ceremony. This award is for the best young player in the world.

Alexia Putellas

won the Women's Ballon d'Or for the second year in a row. Beth Mead finished in second place.

"Without my team-mates this would not have been possible,"

she said.

"I want to thank the staff and the coach and everyone involved at Barcelona."

Lewandowski

 

won the Gerd Muller trophy for the second consecutive year. This award is for the best striker in the world. Lewandowski broke Muller's Bundesliga goalscoring record last season.

"Thank you to my ex teammates from Bayern Munich and my new teammates at Barcelona,"

he said.

"I have to have my teammates looking for my runs behind the defenders, and it's not easy."

Real Madrid goalkeeper

Thibaut Courtois

won the Yachin trophy which is for the best goalkeeper of the year. He said:

'I want to firstly thank my teammates, the club Real Madrid, to be part of this amazing team,"

he said.

"Last season was an amazing season for all of us, for me especially."

Premier League champions

Manchester City

also won the Club of the year award.

And the big award of the night as expected went to

Karim Benzema

. Real Madrid star won the Ballon d'Or for the first time. Mane and De Bruyne finished in second and third places.

France Football magazine also revealed the full Ballon d'Or 2022 rankings on Monday.
