Potter defends Gerrard following Aston Villa's poor start

Gerrard has recorded only 2 victories in recent weeks and is under intense pressure from Villa fans.

Chelsea manager Graham Potter has defended Steven Gerrard after Aston Villa's poor performances in recent weeks.

Villa have won only 2 of their 9 matches in the Premier League and are 3 points above the Premier League relegation zone. The pressure on Steven Gerrard has increased and the possibility of his dismissal will increase if he does not get better results in the coming weeks. However, Potter defended Gerrard and claimed that the former Liverpool captain was trying to get better results.

"The margins are very small in the Premier League - I'm sure Steven will want to improve their results.

"If they had beaten Forest they would have gone above Liverpool so that shows you how quick things change.

"There's always somebody under pressure in the Premier League and at the moment it's Steven."

Asked if any team can stop Man City, Potter replied:

"I'm certainly not in position to predict what will happen. We know the strength of Man City and the other teams as well. Our focus is to go game to game. We've not played that many games in the league and then the World Cup is on the horizon. So we just focus on the next match and that's Aston Villa."
