Julen Lopetegui turns down Wolves head coach job

Julen Lopetegui reportedly has turned down the chance to be appointed as Wolves head coach.

According to Fabrizio Romano and Guillem Balague, Julen Lopetegui has decided to reject the

side

Wolves

offer to become their head coach and they are now prepared to explore other options.

Wolves’ executive chairman Jeff Shi reportedly flew to Spain on Sunday and opened talks with Lopetegui on Monday but family issues have seen Lopetegui reluctantly turn Wolves down.

Reports suggest that Lopetegui's father is unwell and he has chosen to remain in Spain rather than move to England. Wolves also wanted to appoint Lopetegui in 2016 but he decided to accept the Spanish federation's offer and became Spain's manager.

Wolves sacked Bruno Lage last week and are in 18th place with just six points after nine games. They suffered a 3-0 defeat against Chelsea last Saturday. Steve Davis is still in temporary charge and they will face Nottingham Forest at home on Saturday.

The 56-year-old Lopetegui was sacked as Sevilla manager last week after a 4-1 home defeat against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League. Lopetegui was sacked with Sevilla in 17th position in LaLiga. He was appointed as Sevilla's manager in 2019 after his departure from Real Madrid and won the Europe League with Sevilla in his first season.

Sevilla

re-appoint Jorge Sampaoli as manager after Julen Lopetegui's sacking. Sampaoli had been out of a job since stepping down as manager at Marseille in July.
