High Court orders Rebekah Vardy to pay £1.5m to Coleen Rooney

Vardy filed a lawsuit against Rooney after she accused her of leaking "fake stories" to the press in 2019. After a long-going lawsuit, the court ordered Vardy to pay a total cost of £1,667,860 to Rooney.

The center of the case was a social media post published by

Wayne Rooney’

s wife,

Coleen

, in 2019, in which she accused Vardy of leaking fake stories about her to the press, which led to Rooney being dubbed "Wagatha Christie" after the famous crime novelist Agatha Christie.

Rebekah Vardy

denied such claims as she took Rooney to court in June 2020 as the trial finally reached the High Court this May. However, the case did not go as Vardy planned as the court found the essence of Rooney's social media post was "substantially true", concluding that Vardy was responsible for leaking

Rooney's

private information to the press.

Judge Steyn

said Rooney's evidence was

"honest and reliable"

, but labeled Vardy's evidence

"manifestly inconsistent... evasive or implausible"

. As a result, Jamie Vardy's wife must pay 90 percent of Rooney's costs, with £800,000 compensation paid by November 15.

The libel claim was held defended by Rooney on the grounds of truth and public interest. Both ladies spent "hundreds of thousands of pounds" on the lawsuit so far, according to the court, with the total costs estimated to be at least £2 million.
