Benevento appoints Fabio Cannavaro as their new head coach

Former Juventus defender Fabio Cannavaro takes his first coaching role in Italian football after being appointed as the Serie B club Benevento's new head coach on Wednesday.

Already having dug-out experience in the Chinese Super League with Guangzhou Evergrande and Tianjin Quanjian, the 2006 World Cup winner has taken his first role in Italian football as

Benevento

announced the news in a statement. Through 126 games with Guangzhou Evergrande,

Fabio Cannavaro

averaged 2.06 points per match as he hopes to shake things up at the Campania side.

Signing a two-year contract, Cannavaro has to take a Benevento side that sits 13th in the

Serie B

table, with only seven points from their opening 6 league games.

 

Beginning his career in 1992, the Italian defender played for several clubs in his country such as Napoli, Parma FC, Inter Milan, and Juventus FC. However, he only enjoyed success with

Parma

, winning the UEFA Cup in 1999, the Italian Cup in 1999, 2002 and the Italian Supercup in 1999.

After captaining Italy to win the

2006 World Cup

, he joined Real Madrid, where he proved himself by winning the La Liga in 2007, and 2008 in addition to a Ballon d’Or.

Cannavaro had become a member of the

Al-Ahli

coaching team after his retirement as a player, he was also the Assistant Coach of the Dubai club between 2013 and 2014 before becoming head coach of Guangzhou Evergrande in 2014.
