Mertens admits Napoli spell could have been “different”

As no new terms have been reached with the club, Dries Mertens has taken up a new challenge elsewhere.

Dries Mertens

admitted that his time at

Napoli

"could have ended differently" following his departure from the club at the end of the previous season as they did not reach an agreement over new terms.

The Belgium international put an end to his nine-year spell in Naples before the start of the new season following the failure of reaching an agreement with the Serie A side. He now made a move to Super Lig outfit

Galatasaray

as a free agent.

The 35-year-old contributed to two Coppa Italia victories and another a further Supercoppa Italia. Talking about his exit, Mertens revealed that he has kept his family home in the area.

"It's been a wonderful nine years,"

Mertens told

DAZN

"Of course, it could've ended differently. I think the club could've talked about [the contract] earlier. I hope I can learn from this experience to become even greater.

"Today I'm very happy because my family and I have embarked on a new adventure. I'm in a great city and a great club.

"[But] of course leaving Napoli was hard. My wife cried at the thought of leaving home, so we decided to keep it and try to spend as much time there as possible."
