Lionel Messi not nominated for Ballon d'Or for first time since 2005

Lionel Messi has been left off Ballon d’Or 2022 shortlist revealed by France Football on Friday.

The nominees for the 2022 Ballon d'Or were revealed on Friday by France Football. The 2022 ceremony when the winner will be revealed is on 17 October 2022.

The biggest name who has missed out from the list is the seven-time winner

Lionel Messi

. This is the first time since 2005 that Messi has been left off the 30-man list of Ballon d'Or nominees.

Neymar

is also absent from this list while

Cristiano Ronaldo

who has won five Ballon d'Or is nominated in 2022. Real Madrid star Karim Benzema is the favorite to win this year’s trophy.

The 35-year-old joined PSG from Barcelona last summer and only managed to score 11 goals in all competitions. It was Messi’s lowest single-season goal tally since 2005/06.

For the first time, the Ballon d'Or is being awarded based on a full season rather than a calendar year.
