Chile will appeal FIFA decision to keep Ecuador at World Cup
The Chilean federation will appeal FIFA's decision to keep Ecuador at the 2022 World Cup.
complained to FIFA that
Ecuadorhad fielded an ineligible player in Byron Castill. They alleged that Castillo was born in Colombia and had been using a falsified passport and birth certificate.
Castillo played eight qualifying games for Ecuador, including two against Chile, and Ecuador gained four points against La Roja. If those eight matches had been forfeited as 3-0 defeats then Chile would have risen from seventh to fourth.
FIFA's disciplinary committee rejected Chile's complaint last month but Jorge Yunge, general secretary of the Chilean Football Association, said in a statement:
"We are completely sure about the conclusions of our investigations.
"It is absolutely clear that the player uses an adulterated Ecuadorean document. What is at stake here is not just a place in the 2022 World Cup, but the entire principle of fair play.”
Chile missed out on qualification, finishing in seventh place, while Ecuador qualified automatically in the fourth spot in the CONMEBOL competition.
