Villarreal closing on a deal for free-agent Edinson Cavani

As Cavani's contract with Manchester United ended last month, he was heavily linked with a move to La Liga as he reportedly is close to join Villarreal ahead of 2022/23.

Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, and Valencia have all been connected with moves for the marksman over the years. All reported interested La Liga sides were able to provide him with European football ahead of the Qatar World Cup, which was a necessity for the Uruguayan.

However, according to

Mundo Deportivo

, Cavani has sealed a pre-agreement with

Villarreal

and is currently looking for a house nearby. Cavani is supposed to be a replacement for the Yellow Submarines’ outgoing forwards, Arnaut Danjuma and Paco Alcacer. Danjuma has been linked with a move to the Premier League while Paco Alcacer is near to joining Scotland Championship side, Celtic.

Cavani

has played for Danubio, Palermo, Napoli, and PSG before eventually joining

Manchester United

. Making 130 appearances for the Uruguayan national team, he has scored 54 goals. However,  Cavani has had a difficult season with the Red Devils, with his stats falling far short of what he has been used to in his illustrious career. During the whole 2021/22 season, he only had two goals and two assists in 20 appearances.

Despite his bad season with United, Cavani has proven himself throughout his career to be a lethal goalscorer. He’s still the top scorer in

Paris Saint-Germain

’s history, contributing 200 goals in the 301 games he played in France.
