Bordeaux loses appeal for being relegated to third tier

Bordeaux are set to begin the 2022-23 season outside the top two tiers of the French football following their loss against their demotion.

The relegation of Bordeaux to the French football’s third tier was confirmed by the DNCG, who dismissed their appeal against that decision.

Bordeaux

, who have gotten the

Ligue 1

title six times, ended the season sitting bottom of the table last season and they were getting ready having their second-tier campaign for the first time since the early 1990s. However, they got another demotion to the third tier last month when DNCG examined their financials.

The club, who have debts of €40million, appealed the decision, but the French Football Federation insisted that the decision will stand.

The 2009 Ligue 1 champions’ owner,

Gerard Lopez

, thinks that going below Ligue 2 would have “catastrophic” financial implications, saying:

"With its structure and costs, this club cannot exist in National 1."

Lopez also said the club would go as far as filing a bankruptcy, which can result in more demotion.

They may still appeal to the French Olympic Committee or have the decision suspended but they have to cash in on some first-team players this summer.
