Raphael Varane aims for a 'new start' with Erik ten Hag

Raphael Varane's first season with Manchester United was difficult, but the defender has high hopes for the upcoming campaign.

Raphael Varane

is excited about the idea of Erik ten Hag giving

Manchester United

a "fresh start." The 2018 World Cup champion hopes to have a better second season at Old Trafford.

Varane left

Real Madrid

to join United last August, but he had a tough season as the Red Devils struggled to a sixth-place finish after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was replaced as coach by

Ralf Rangnick

.

Varane made 29 appearances for United in all competitions during his first year there. He only helped keep six clean sheets, though, and the team ended up with the fewest points in Premier League history (58).

But hiring

Erik Ten Hag

, who used to coach Ajax, has given United fans hope that they will do better next season. Varane has said that the team is excited to work with the Dutchman. He told the club's media outlets, "It's a new season and a new start, so everyone is excited to hear about the new manager."

"Of course, we want to do well and win every game, so we'll have to get ready for the new season. I think it's important for us to train hard and be ready." United will start the 2022–23 Premier League season on August 7 at home against Brighton and Hove Albion. Before that, they will go on a preseason tour of Asia and Australia.

On July 12, United's first game under Ten Hag will be against old rivals Liverpool in Thailand. Varane says the team's pre-season work will be very important if they want to start the next season strong.

He went on, "We want to be ready for the new season." "We need to work hard, and there will be a lot of training sessions and games, so I think it will be fun and a good time to work hard and get ready for the season.

"I think the atmosphere is different because it's before the season starts and we have to get in shape and get ready. I think it's always fun to play in front of our fans all over the world. It gives us good experience and helps us get ready for the season."
