Brazil and Argentina must replay abandoned World Cup qualifier

Last year's World Cup qualifier between Brazil and Argentina was strangely abandoned, but FIFA has ordered the match to be replayed.

FIFA

has confirmed that the abandoned

World Cup qualifier

between

Brazil

and

Argentina

will be replayed after both countries' football federations filed appeals.

The original match in Sao Paolo was called off after only five minutes when Brazilian health officials arrived on the scene, accusing players Emiliano Martinez, Emiliano Buendia,

Cristian Romero

, and

Giovani Lo Celso

of providing false information on their immigration forms and violating the country's Covid-19 laws.

The initial FIFA decision was issued in February, and it ordered the match to be replayed with all four players suspended and fines imposed on both teams. Both countries' federations filed appeals against the sanctions, but FIFA has now confirmed that the match will be replayed at an undetermined date and location.

"The FIFA Appeal Committee has taken conclusions on the appeals lodged by the Brazilian Football Association (CBF) and the Argentinian Football Association," FIFA stated in a statement on Monday (AFA).

"The Appeal Committee confirmed that the match will be replayed and upheld the fine of CHF 50,000 imposed on both associations as a result of the abandonment after analyzing both parties' statements and considering all facts of the case."

Brazil and Argentina both qualified for the tournament in Qatar with ease, with Brazil leading the CONMEBOL qualification group with 45 points after an undefeated season and Argentina second with 39 points, ensuring that the replayed match will have no bearing on the final results.
